Tour Highlights
Overview of Your Tour Itinerary…
Note: The ticket price includes all breakfasts, dinners, accommodation, and transport costs during the tour. You will need to arrange travel to and from the tour’s start point and, during the day, purchase your lunch, as well as any snacks and drinks as required.
Day One: 6 September – Arrival and Windsor Castle
- Pick up at a central London location and transfer to the MacDonald Hotel Windsor, our boutique hotel, located conveniently directly opposite Windsor Castle.
- Drop our baggage and cross the road to Windsor Castle to tour St George’s Chapel and see the final resting place of Henry VIII, Jane Seymour, and Charles Brandon.
- Afternoon tea will be laid on back at the hotel, followed in the early evening by an introductory talk by one of our resident historians, Sarah Morris (aka The Tudor Travel Guide), on Anne Boleyn at Windsor Castle, and Estelle Paranque on the rise of Anne Boleyn.
- In the early evening, we head back to the castle for a private tour of the state rooms and stand in the very room where Anne was made Marquess of Pembroke.
Day Two: 6 September – Hampton Court Palace
- Travel to Hampton Court Palace for an expert-led tour. We have exclusive access to the palace, while it is closed to the general public. Alongside our expert guides, we will explore the state apartments, recreating how they were used during the Tudor period, and delve behind the scenes to discover some spaces off the usual tourist route.
- Late afternoon, return to the MacDonald Hotel in Windsor.
- Meet for early evening Tudor fun, courtesy of author and historian Adam Pennington (aka The Tudor Chest), before heading out to dinner at The Ivy, just a stone’s throw from our hotel.
Day Three: 8 September – The National Archives
- Our third day will be spent at the National Archives, which holds many important documents relating to Anne Boleyn: her rise, time as queen, and her fall, including the precious documents relating to her trial in May 1536.
- Sean Cunningham, Head of Medieval Records, will be our guide to these documents, which you will have a chance to see and touch for yourself!
- After checking into our central London hotel, we will head to Dishoom!, a popular London restaurant and a Simply Tudor Tours favourite that conjures up flavours of the East.
Day Four: 9 September – The Tower of London
- On this day of the tour, we explore one of the most fascinating, if not foreboding, locations in Anne’s life: the Tower of London, palace, arsenal, royal mint, and menagerie. This place saw the pinnacle of Anne’s triumph during her coronation celebrations, but also the most dramatic days surrounding the fall of the Boleyns and her ultimate execution. We will enjoy a private tour of the palace, accessing places not usually open to the public, highlighting the most important locations associated with Anne’s time there along the way.
- We have allowed some free time later in the afternoon to explore more of the Tower for yourself, or accompany your co-hosts to Tower Hill and the site of the scaffold, where so many, including George Boleyn and the other men condemned alongside Anne, died.
- The day at the Tower is always busy, with lots of ground to cover. So, this evening will be free for you to relax in the hotel or explore more of London’s nightlife if you so wish.
Day Five: 10 September – Westminster Abbey
- On the morning of day four, we will meet our Blue Badge Guide, who will co-host our exploration of Westminster Abbey. Along the way, we will focus on the coronation ceremony and share tales of Anne’s coronation and her shining legacy: Elizabeth I. We will also hear stories from your co-hosts about the rediscovery of the burial vaults of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York in the 1800s.
- Visit the tombs of Anne of Cleves, Elizabeth I, Mary I, Edward VI, Mary Queen of Scots and Margaret Beaufort.
- Head up to the Jubilee Galleries to see artefacts from the Tudor dynasty, including the funeral effigies of Elizabeth of York, Elizabeth I, Mary I and Margaret Beaufort’s Book of Hours.
- With a day of sightseeing in central London behind us, we will head back to the hotel to freshen up before dining together at a restaurant in central London.
Day Six: 11 September – Hever Castle & Penshurst Place
- After breakfast, we will travel to Hever Castle and check in.
- There will be a little free time to relax and take in the vibe of one of the most celebrated and beloved locations in the Tudor world before we transfer to Penshurst Place for a private house tour.
- Following our visit to Penshurst, we will travel the short distance back to Hever Castle and settle into our accommodation in the Astor Wing, which has been reserved exclusively for our use throughout our stay.
- In the evening (weather permitting), we will gather for pre-dinner drinks on the lawns surrounding the Astor Wing, before dining in Astor’s recreated great hall.
Day Seven: 12 September – Hever Castle
- Enjoy breakfast in the Astor Suite’s Great Hall before gathering for three talks by expert historians on the life of Anne Boleyn. One of these will be from our historian-in-residence, Estelle Paranque. Other speakers TBD.
- As an optional extra, Sarah and Adam will lead a guided walk up to nearby St Peter’s Church to visit the grave of Sir Thomas Boleyn and his infant son, Henry.
- Following lunch taken at your leisure, you will have the afternoon free to explore and enjoy Hever Castle & Gardens. It will be a time to relax and absorb the history of this beautiful historic house at your own pace.
- In the early evening, we will meet for an out-of-hours tour of Hever Castle, followed by a private dinner in its Great Hall. Expect a memorable evening with some very important Tudor guests!
Day Eight: 13 September – Departure
- Following breakfast at Hever, we will say our final farewells.
